Ecology

Megalorchis regalis is a terrestrial species that grows at elevations of 1800-2000 m in moss forest. It flowers in October-November (Du Puy et al. 1999). Habitat loss and degradation threatens the survival of orchids on Madagascar, including M. regalis (IUC Orchid Specialist Gwup 1996). (RN).

General Description

A large terrestrial herb with a stout leafy stem and fibrous roots fibrous; tubers not seen. Leaves many, elliptic-ligulate, acuminate, arranged spirally along the stem, smaller above, petiolate, green. lnflorescence terminal, densely many-flowered; bracts ovate- lanceolate, acuminate, longer than the pedicellate ovary. Flowers resupinate, large, white, glabrous. Dorsal sepal erect, free, ovate. Laterla sepals spreading erect, free, falcate-ovate, dilated below, forming with the base of the labellum a large mentum. Petals entire, adnate to the dorsal sepal to form a hood over the column, obliquely ovate-triangular. Labellum large, porrect in basal half, recurved in apical half, three-lobed; side lobes erect; mid-lobe much larger, clawed, tongue-shaped, strongly recurved in middle; spur cylindrical, pendent. Column reclined, short and broad; rostellum three-lobed with a short low mid-lobe and two elongate, upcurved rostellar arms separated by a broad connective, pollinia two, clavate; viscidia two, large, cucullate; lateral appendages prominent. A monospecific genus endemic to the eastern mountains of central Madagascar. (PC).
